It is rare for WhatsApp to announce new features via press release. But the company is making an exception for the current update. From now on there is a new shopping function in Messenger, the so-called WhatsApp shopping cart. TECHNOLOGY BUTTON reveals what’s behind it.
In May 2020, Facebook made it easier for retailers to integrate their online shops into the network and Instagram. Since November, WhatsApp has also allowed shopping in Messenger via a special shopping button. However, the process was not really easy for users. That should change with the new WhatsApp shopping cart.
Shopping via WhatsApp shopping cart
According to the messenger, more and more shopping takes place via chats. WhatsApp would like to make it even easier for its users to buy and sell clothes, food or other items and has introduced the so-called shopping cart. With the new shopping function, customers and dealers can get in touch with each other and make sales in the shops.
Using the WhatsApp shopping cart, customers can browse a catalog, select multiple products and send the order to the company as a single message. According to WhatsApp, it is easier for retailers to track orders, manage customer inquiries and close sales.

This is how the shopping cart works
The WhatsApp shopping cart is now available worldwide. To be able to use it, companies need a WhatsApp business account and have to set up a catalog. If they have both, users will see the icon of a shop in the top bar next to the phone symbol, which will lead them to the shop’s catalog.
When browsing the catalog, customers can add any number of items to the shopping cart using a button. If you have any questions about the product, you can also send them directly to the company via WhatsApp chat. The collected order can then be checked again, revised if necessary and sent collectively via chat to the dealer, who can then process it.
WhatsApp shopping isn’t a new feature, but it wasn’t really convenient. Users did not have a shopping cart in which they could collect multiple items and edit them before submitting. With the WhatsApp shopping cart, the messenger can help here.
