It’s official: Apple’s spring event will take place on April 20th. TECHNOLOGY BUTTON has summarized what the company could present for you.
This year’s spring event has the motto “Spring Loaded”. This is a play on words made up of “spring” and “spring loaded” (“under spring tension”). It is actually exciting, because Apple could present several interesting devices. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Apple event will again take place virtually in Apple Park in Cupertino, California.
New hardware at the Apple event in April
At its event, Apple is said to have a whole range of new products in its luggage. We’re not just talking about a new iPad Pro, but also about new AirPods. Another Apple TV, the AirTags and possibly an iPad Mini are also under discussion. It seems certain that fans of the iPhone SE will have to wait until they get a new model.
Apple iPad Pro 2021
About a year ago, Apple presented the current generation of the iPad Pro with a lidar sensor. Market observers are now expecting a comprehensive update this April. The Pro range is Apple’s high-end range of tablets. Here, users get the most extensive performance, the most powerful battery and the largest display with up to 12.9 inches. In the meantime, however, other model series such as the iPad Air have moved closer to the Pro. Here, too, there are extras such as support for the Apple Pencil. The company has to come up with new features for its Pro series so that buyers can continue to use the significantly more expensive models.
The use of a display based on mini LEDs is therefore under discussion. It remains to be seen whether this will only be used in the 12.9-inch version or also in the smaller 11-inch version. Compared to OLED, the new display technology has several advantages such as an even higher contrast and color space, a significantly slimmer design and particularly energy-saving local dimming. Support for 5G is also an issue. So far, the new cellular technology has not played a role in Apple’s tablets. But that is set to change this year. According to rumors, Apple is relying on the new A14X Bionic processor, which is supposed to be a further development of the A14 Bionic of the iPhone 12, for the implementation. There are hardly any more precise details about the iPad Pro 2021, which is why we are all the more excited about the possible presentation at the Apple event.

New Apple TV 4K expected
The latest Apple TV with 4K is reportedly said to have a higher focus on gaming. The streaming device comes with a powerful chip especially for this purpose. For Apple, this would be an opportunity to focus on its own game service, Apple Arcade. The company may even develop a suitable controller that turns the Apple TV into a game console. Current rumors suggest that the new Apple TV could support 120 Hertz.
Is Apple finally showing the AirTags at the April event?
There has been speculation on the Internet about a presentation of the AirTags for almost a year. At its April event, Apple could finally present the small trailers with radio chips. After all, there were references to the accessories in the recently released beta of iOS 14.5. The AirTags can be attached to various objects like a small, inconspicuous tag and help users to locate them if they are lost. The AirTags should work more precisely than normal Bluetooth trackers and also support other functions such as warning of stalkers. If the trackers recognize that another tracker is permanently in the vicinity of te owner, the owner sends a warning to the cell phone.

Many hope for a new iMac
Since this week it has been clear: The time of the iMac Pro is over. The all-in-one device consisting of a monitor and a PC, presented in 2017, can no longer be configured on the manufacturer’s website, Apple itself indicates the availability of the existing models with “As long as stocks last”. Last year there was a new iMac, without a Pro, but depending on the configuration even more powerful than the older device. Nevertheless, some users are eagerly awaiting the continuation of the Pro series. It is uncertain whether Apple will show this at its event in April.
Like the MacBooks, the new Pro generation will work with Apple’s own M1 ARM processors and could get a new design. A little more angular than before, the display edge narrower and the back flat. Even pictures of colored models were already on the web. Jon Prosser shows a concept of the new iMacs on his YouTube channel:
Presentation of the Apple iPhone SE 3 and AirPods 3 rather unlikely
Originally, it was assumed that Apple could introduce the latest generation of its affordable iPhones this spring. For some time now, however, there have been increasing indications that Apple will not show the iPhone SE 3 at the event this April, but only a year later, in spring 2022. Apparently, the manufacturer would like to give the iPhone SE 2020 a little more time as a current low-cost model before it presents a newer model. Delivery bottlenecks caused by the corona pandemic are also not excluded as a possible reason for the postponement. What we know so far about the iPhone SE 3 , we have summarized in another message.
The third generation of AirPods will probably not appear at the Apple event. Instead, insiders expect a launch in the second half of the year. Visually, they should resemble the AirPods Pro with their silicone attachments, but have a significantly shortened stem. However, users of normal AirPods will still have to do without active noise canceling (ANC) – this is reserved for the Pro models, which Apple will probably update later in the year.
