The mobile operator 1 & 1 has a new LTE tariff on offer, which is aimed specifically at children. If desired, it is also available in a bundle with a smartwatch or smartphone. TECHNOLOGY BUTTON has the details of the new offer and reveals whether it is worth it.
If parents want to book their children a cell phone tariff, they should pay attention to a few things. In contrast to conventional offers for adults, special protective functions should be integrated into the tariffs for the little ones. 1 & 1 is now offering such a child tariff with the appropriate name Kids tariff. Parents not only retain full control via the Control Center, chargeable services such as roaming or special numbers are also blocked by default. In addition, the offers include child-friendly Internet filters, GPS tracking or, if desired, the limitation of screen time.
Kids tariff from 1 & 1 from 3.99 euros per month
The kids tariff from 1 & 1 is available as a SIM-only variant or in a bundle with a smartwatch or smartphone. All variants have a term of at least 24 months. It is automatically extended for a further year unless parents give three months’ notice to the end of the contract.
For the kids tariff without hardware, 1 & 1 charges a minimum contract period of 3.99 euros per month in the first half year. From the seventh month, however, the costs increase to 6.99 euros per month. There is also a one-time connection price of 19.90 euros. Children receive 1 GB of data volume every month with which they can surf the O2 LTE network at a maximum speed of 21.6 Mbit / s. When the data volume is used up, the bandwidth drops to 64 kbit / s. For data flat there are 100 units that can be freely used for minutes of calls or SMS. Once they have been used, no further phone calls or messages can be sent. What on the one hand promises cost control, but on the other hand also means that children can no longer call their parents,
The services included in the 1 & 1 kids tariff can also be used in other EU countries thanks to EU roaming. However, parents must first activate foreign use in the Control Center.

Tariff with smartwatch
If parents book the kids tariff with Smartwatch, 1 & 1 charges a monthly hardware surcharge of 3 euros. The costs increase to 6.99 euros in the first half of the year and then rise to 9.99 euros per month. The one-time connection costs are also more expensive at 39.90 euros.
The smartwatch offered by 1 & 1 at the kids tariff is the “Movetime Family Watch MT40” from the manufacturer TCL. It is available in blue or pink. Thanks to the integrated cellular module, the little ones can use the smartwatch to make calls and send messages, start video calls with the integrated camera and take selfies. Parents can decide for themselves which phone numbers are allowed to be contacted. The smartwatch also comes with a step counter and calorie consumption counter. Children can also quickly ask for help using an emergency button. If desired, parents even have the option of tracking their child’s whereabouts via GPS.
The display of the smartwatch shows in color, the dials can be adjusted if desired. Thanks to the Mirasol technology, the watch is quite energy-saving – according to the manufacturer, it lasts for about two days on one battery charge. In addition, the smartwatch is protected against water in accordance with IP65. The Movetime Family Watch MT40 is available in stores at prices from 114 euros.
There is a choice of four smartphones
Even when bundled with a smartphone, the basic fee for the kids tariff from 1 & 1 is 6.99 euros in the first six months. After that, the monthly costs increase depending on the smartphone model selected. You can choose from:
- Samsung Galaxy A21s (16.99 euros / month from 7th month)
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro (19.99 euros / month from 7th month)
- Huawei P30 Lite New Edition (19.99 euros / month from 7th month)
The iPhone SE is an exception with 64 GB of storage, for which 1 & 1 charges a bundle price of 14.99 euros in the first six months. The monthly costs then increase to 29.99 euros. Every smartphone comes with a suitable and child-friendly mobile phone cover.
With the iPhone, 1 & 1 relies on the child protection functions already integrated in iOS. For the Android smartphones, there is instead the family app from Google with suitable child protection. Both options allow parents to limit screen time, manage apps and app times, track location and set filters for surfing the Internet.
We have also listed some of the devices offered by 1 & 1 at the kids rate in the list of the best smartphones up to 200 euros . Here you can find out more about the models and see what the alternatives can do. However, users should know that the iPhone SE is the old model from 2016. It is therefore no longer really recommended.

TECHNOLOGY BUTTON means
“A smartphone tariff especially for children is always a good thing when parents want to be on the safe side without much effort. Because many filters and child-friendly settings are already preset here. You can’t go wrong with the kids tariff from 1 & 1. But the offer is also more expensive than normal cell phone tariffs. For the SIM-only tariff alone, parents pay an arithmetical 6.24 euros per month within the minimum contract period. For this price, other providers already offer an all-network flat rate with at least 2 GB of data volume – but without child protection. At least on Android and iOS, this can be activated by the system. This includes, for example, internet filters as well as screen and app times. Phone numbers can also be blocked on Google and Apple, which, however, makes more effort. Our tip: Before booking, see whether you trust yourself to make the necessary settings in the system yourself. If the answer is yes, a classic tariff will also do it, with which you can then save a little.”
