Love at first swipe – Dating has rarely been easier. But who exactly is the person behind my digital match? Often times, nimble smartphone dating is about superficialities. It is obvious that this can lead to dubious intentions. Now the developers of the dating app want to create more security through background information from individual users.
True love or one-night stands – every meeting requires a few certain rules. In the USA, the dating app Tinder will in future provide information about the criminal record of the person found – or matches. This is to prevent dubious meetings in advance. TECHNOLOGY BUTTON took a closer look at it.
Criminal record at the touch of a button
According to the app developer Match Group, in the future it will be possible to query criminal background information from individual Tinder users. A collaboration with the company Garbo, which maintains a database of legal violations of gender-based violence, is on the agenda. A warning is given to people who have become suspicious of violent crime, harassment or stalking, for example. It is still unclear how Tinder could identify such people with fake profile information.
Database query for Tinder matches free of charge?
It is not yet known exactly how the communication between Tinder and Garbo will take place. Presumably, users can access the information in the criminal sense of the supposedly dubious persons via a database query. It is not clear whether this will take place on the fly or with a delay. It is also unknown whether this feature will be available in the free version or only in the paid version.

Data protection and personal rights
In the United States of America, private companies have more access rights to personal data than in Germany. We asked media lawyer Mr. Christian Solmecke whether there could be such a query system for matches in dating apps like Tinder in Germany in the future.
“Freedom of contract, as a special case of private autonomy, is even guaranteed under constitutional law. In principle, the parties are free to design the conclusion and content of a contract. However, implementation in Germany is not conceivable. After all, data protection in Europe and Germany is much more strictly regulated than in the USA. We fought hard for these rights in Europe. Therefore, there are numerous massive data protection concerns that prevent legal implementation. “
In this country, so-called soft skills are required in order to classify dubious behavior by strangers after a match. For example, a public square can offer more security on a first date than a balcony at home.
