Every month the editors present you the new films and series from the major streaming providers. In the following, we would like to bring you closer to the current highlights, i.e. the series and films that you should definitely watch. You can read below what this will be in October.
Netflix highlights in October
Netflix has a lot of new content to offer in October. The following series and films are particularly recommended:
- The Alienist (Season 2)
Netflix started the first season of “Die Alienist” in April 2018. So the fans of the series had to wait almost two and a half years for the sequel. But in October 2020, the second season will finally begin on Netflix.
The series is based on a novel and stars like Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning. The action takes place in New York in the 1896s. Many male prostitutes disguised as women fall victim to a cruel murderer. Police chief Theodore Roosevelt asks psychologist Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl) for help, who in turn receives help from Roosevelt’s secretary Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning). Together with the newspaper illustrator John Moore (Luke Evans) they try to uncover the series of murders.
The Alienist season two begins with Sara reuniting with Dr. Kreizler and John Moore, now a New York Times reporter, to find the Spanish consular’s kidnapped daughter. Her investigation leads her down a dark path of murder and deception.
- The Trial of the Chicago 7
USA 1968, at the time of the Vietnam War. Seven young men, along with other members of the movement, protested the war in Chicago. There were riots and sometimes violent uprisings with the police, in the course of which the seven were arrested and charged with conspiracy and riot. The most notorious trial in US history followed.
- Barbarians (Season 1)
Fans of “Vikings” will also like the new series “Barbarians”. Produced in Germany, it tells the story of the battle in the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD in a total of six episodes. The Germanic tribes are trying by all means to prevent the Roman Empire from spreading further. Three characters, who have known each other since childhood, are at the center of the plot. Arminius was kidnapped by the Romans as a child and grew up in a good household in Rome. He later became a military leader, but turned back to his old clan, unrecognized by the Romans. Finally he rose to become the leader of the Germanic tribes. He is followed by Folkwin, a simple Germanic warrior and his secret lover Thusnelda, daughter of a Cheruscan prince. Their common story is told against the backdrop of the looming battle.
Streaming Highlights on Amazon Prime Video
Amazon Prime Video offers an advantage over the other streaming services: Prime customers have access already included in their membership and do not need to take out a separate subscription. Every now and then there are real streaming highlights on Prime Video. This is also the case in October, when the provider fully relies on the approaching Halloween festival.
- The Walking Dead: World Beyond (Season 1)
“The Walking Dead: World Beyond” is now the third offshoot of the zombie cult series. The action takes place 10 years after the outbreak of the apocalypse, with other characters again in the center. The two young sisters Iris (Aliyah Royale) and Hope (Alexa Mansour) hardly know life before the zombie drama. Growing up behind high walls, they try to lead a relatively normal life. Iris is a model student, Hope, contrary to her name, has given up all hope of a good future. The sisters’ mother died early, her father is a biologist trying to find out the cause of the zombie disease and therefore left the two girls early. But suddenly she receives a call for help from her father …
- Black Box (Horror Film)
After losing his wife and memory in a car accident, a single father is subjected to excruciating experimental treatment that leaves him wondering who he really is.
The best on Disney + in October
There’s more to Disney + than just series and films for kids. The streaming provider also covers the Star Wars universe, the stories of the Marvel heroes and more. In October, a showcase series starts in the second season, which is one of our streaming highlights.
- Once Upon a Time (Seasons 1-7)
Disney + releases new content every week – the deadline is Friday. As early as September, subscribers were able to stream the first two seasons of the series “Once Upon a Time”. The remaining 5 seasons will appear in October, one each week from the 2nd to the 30th of the month.
Young Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) learns that her parents are none other than Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (David Nolan). Her own son Henry (Jared Gilmore), whom she put up for adoption, was taken in by the Evil Queen (Regina Mills) and now lives in sleepy Storybrooke. The small town is filled with fairy tale characters who slowly but surely regain their memories of the fairy tale forest with Emma’s arrival.
The film is based on a true story about the hit “Clouds”. The young Zach Sobiech (Fin Argus) has cancer, but that doesn’t stop him from pursuing his passion, music, and from maintaining his positivity. “Clouds” is based on the biography of the same name that Laura Sobiech, Zach’s mother, wrote after his death.
- The Mandalorian (Season 2)
At the start of Disney + in March 2020, the streaming provider advertised the series “The Mandalorian” set in the Star Wars universe. This is now going into the second season. From October 30th, Disney + will broadcast a new episode every week – all in all, season 2 of “The Mandalorian” cannot be streamed.
After the characters and the setting were introduced in the first season – above all the two protagonists, the silent Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and the even more silent “Baby Yoda” aka “the child” – season 2 really gets down to business go. Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) is now positioned as the big bad guy. He tries at all costs to bring the “child” gifted in power into his power. Meanwhile, Mando and his allies try to find the home of the little green creature.
Recommendations on Sky
Sky bundles its series in the Sky Entertainment offer, while films are again available with Sky Cinema. However, since the packages were changed in July 2020, the film offer can no longer be booked as a single package. Together with the series subscription, customers have full access to all new products in October.
- The Walking Dead (Season 10 Finale)
Wer wissen möchte, wie Staffel 10 von „The Walking Dead“ zu Ende geht, ist bei Sky richtig. Das Finale der Staffel ist einer der Streaming-Highlights im Oktober. Im kommenden Jahr findet die Serie mit Staffel 11 dann ihr endgültiges Ende.

- Cats (Musical Verfilmung)
The film “Cats” is based on the successful musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber. About the plot: Once a year, a large group of cats gathers to celebrate together and at the end of the day choose a cat from among them, which is then reborn and given a new cat life. The musical is mainly about the many different characters who come together and finally unite against the bad cat Macavity. Although the film is with u. a. Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson and Json Derulo were prominently cast, but that didn’t save “Cats” from a lot of bad criticism. Above all, the strange CGI technology, which is used generously, met with rejection from the audience and critics. The great music by Webber and the choreographies make the film worth seeing and listening to.
- 1917 (War Film)
The Oscar-winning war drama “1917” by Sam Mendes accompanies two British soldiers in the First World War. Will Schofield (George MacKay) and Tom Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) are on their way across the war zone with an important message for Colonel Mackenzie (Benedict Cumberbatch). Above all, the one-cut technology and the resulting impressive real-time images make the film, which also stands out from the mass of war films, a real streaming highlight.
Streaming highlights on Joyn Plus +, Rakuten TV and Apple TV +
In addition to the major providers on the market – Netflix, Amazon and Co. – there are also various other streaming services with different orientations. Above all Apple’s in-house streaming service, Apple TV +, which produces significantly less than Netflix, for example, but already impressed with popular content such as “The Morning Show”.
- The Grudge – Rakuten TV
October is the recognized horror month of the year: The dark season begins and everyone likes to watch a horror film on Halloween. From October 1st on Rakuten TV therefore to see a reboot of the horror classic “The Grudge”. Directed by Nicolas Pesce, executive producer was among others Sam Raimi (“Tanz der Teufel”, “Spider-Man”), who already worked on the original.
The film is set in the same timeframe as that of 2004, but the location has been moved from Japan to an American suburb. During her investigation, a single mother (Andrea Riseborough) and police officer comes across a vengeful ghost who is terrorizing those around him. With her persistence, she not only endangers herself, but also her son.
- Tiny World – Apple TV+
The documentary series “Tiny World” deals with the rather small inhabitants of nature. Paul Rudd is both executive producer and narrator and leads through an amazing world that we sometimes can’t even perceive. Each episode focuses on a different type and a new story.
- Spider-Man: Homecoming – Joyn
The film “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is part of the Marvel Universe and is directly linked to the events in “The First Avenger: Civil War”. There Captain America and Iron faced each other, each with a group of superheroes behind them. After the fight, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) has a hard time finding his way back to his everyday school life. Although he is referred to the bench by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), he still takes on arms dealer Adrian Toomes aka The Vulture (Michael Keaton).
- On the Rocks – Apple TV+
The American comedy drama was written and directed by Sofia Coppola. The young Laura (Rashida Jones), actually happily married and mother of two daughters, suspects that her husband is cheating on her. She therefore turns to her father Felix (Bill Murray) for help, who goes on a search for the truth with her.
- Baby Driver – Joyn
The action thriller “Baby Driver” is coming to Joyn in October. Miles (Ansel Elgort), nicknamed “Baby” because of his youthful looks, is a first class driver. Because he owes gang boss Doc (Kevin Spacey), he drives the getaway car during his robbery. However, when he falls in love with the pretty waitress Debora (Lily James), things get a bit more complicated.
In addition to the actors and the wonderfully choreographed action scenes, the soundtrack in particular makes the film absolutely worth seeing. Music plays a central role in the film anyway, as baby always has an upbeat song on his ears during his fast-paced journeys due to tinnitus ‘.

There is not only first-class film and series entertainment with streaming services, fans also get their money’s worth on television. A special highlight in October is the 3rd season of the popular German series “Babylon Berlin”, which will start on October 11th. can be seen in the first and is also available in the media library.
