The best tips for aspiring video bloggers

Thanks to the reach of YouTube and increasingly cheaper camera equipment, virtually anyone can start a video blog today, better known as a vlog. But how do you get started?

Moving pictures are the thing on the internet. No wonder that platforms from Vimeo to YouTube are booming with their countless vlogs. But how difficult is it to set up and run your own video blog? And is it worth it? TECHNOLOGY BUTTON gives tips.

Different types of video blog

Vlogs can be worthwhile, says Patrick Fass, founder of the video agency Herzuß in Berlin. A video blog of your own could be “a nice thing to publicly share a certain passion or hobby with others and to exchange ideas with like-minded people.” It is not uncommon for such hobby channels on YouTube to build up large reach that even offer the potential make money from the vlog.

But the effort should not be underestimated: Vlogs required planning, regularity and patience for the post-production, explains Pauline Walthart from the video agency Blynk in Hamburg. In principle, however, vlogs could be successful in very different areas.

“That ranges from the professional content creator, who gives insights into his life through the diary-like videos, to stars and starlets who use vlogs for fan loyalty and their own promotion,” says Walthart – and then of course there is also the possibility of this video -Format to use for product marketing.

What a good vlog should offer

The most important question of a vlogger is formulated by video marketing expert Beatrice Madach from Berlin: “What exactly do I want to do and for whom are my videos intended?” The target group must be clearly defined, if only because it is much more fun if your own videos also generate interest.

“A good vlog is one that is very relevant to a very specific group of people,” summarizes Madach. The videos should be specific, offer added value to the target group and come regularly. And: nothing works without technology. But nobody should be put off by that, says Madach – it often turns out that people have a lot of fun with video editing.

Hardware and requirements

At the beginning, however, the smartphone camera is enough to make good videos. However, Beatrice Madach recommends a clip-on microphone in order to achieve good sound quality. A tripod with a smartphone holder is also essential.

It is best to shoot in daylight without direct sunlight. There is often particularly beautiful light either early or late in the day, explains Madach. Inside, it’s best to film with your face facing the window – or use the artificial light of an LED panel.

And then there are some legal pitfalls to be aware of. First of all, there is copyright, explains Madach: Music is almost always legally protected and cannot simply be cut into your own video. To be on the safe side, you should look for so-called royalty-free music that is offered by musicians, composers or service providers commissioned with the exploitation free of charge or for a comparatively low license fee.

The personal rights of others can also be affected: “Basically, people who appear in the vlog and are therefore published on YouTube must be asked for permission beforehand,” says Pauline Walthart. But this does not affect every passerby in the background.

There is also mandatory advertising labeling. “Every vlog for which the vlogger receives something in return must be labeled as advertising,” explains Walthart. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be money. Products made available free of charge also count as advertising. ”

Make money with vlog?

Making money from vlogs works in at least three ways. First of all, you can place advertising on YouTube in front of and in the video. Another possibility: Affiliate links to products in online shops. “They always bring the vlogger a commission when someone buys the product based on his link,” explains Walthart. Third, there are product placements: Vlogs with high coverage would make their products available to companies free of charge – or even pay money to have them presented.

“A high reach always attracts companies that want to benefit from it,” says Patrick Fass. But nobody can assume that they will earn larger amounts right from the start: “On the contrary. Building such a channel takes a lot of time and patience. So you should have a lot of staying power ”.
