New most expensive video game in the world sold for $ 660,000

Retro video game prices have skyrocketed over the past decade. Games for console classics like the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) are now a good investment. Now there is a new leader in the most valuable video games in the world – and by a considerable margin!t

It wasn’t until November 2020 that a new record was set in the field of video games at 156,000 US dollars (132,000 euros). This sum was obtained at an auction of a special copy of “Super Mario Bros. 3” for the NES. Previously, in July 2020, a version of “Super Mario Bros.” brought it to at least 114,000 US dollars (about 96,000 euros). Both records have now been literally pulverized, because a newly discovered copy of “Super Mario Bros.” for Nintendo’s first home console, the NES, was auctioned for an incredible 660,000 US dollars (almost 560,000 euros).

Super Mario Bros. is the most valuable game in the world!

What a sum for a single video game. The console classic “Super Mario Bros.” for the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES for short, is one of the icons of console games. The jump-‘n’-run game is celebrating its 35th anniversary in Europe this year and has sold over 40 million copies worldwide. But how can a game that millions of people owned and still own reach $ 660,000 at auction? It is an original, welded copy of the game, in almost perfect condition. The type of packaging was also only used for a short time, which makes the game even less common.

The story behind the discovery of the game is curious. The game was bought for Christmas in 1986 but left in a drawer. It lay there over the years and matured into an absolute jewel. Incidentally, it is not known who bought the game.

Super Mario Bros. 3 replaced as the most valuable game in the world

Super Mario Bros. 3 was released for the NES in the USA in early 1990 and is also considered a milestone in video game history. The platformer around the animated plumber Mario has sold over 17 million times. It is the best-selling video game that was not sold with a console. The auctioned copy is the first production series that is only available in small numbers. The game is also welded and the condition is almost perfect.

The third most expensive video game in the world

Another Super Mario Bros. went under the hammer at an auction in the United States for $ 114,000. This was confirmed by the responsible auction house in Dallas, Heritage Auctions , at the time – incidentally also the same auction house as the current record.

Even then, the game increased in value tremendously. The move from $ 100,150 to $ 114,000 was remarkable. But now Super Mario Bros. 3 and the new copy of Super Mario Bros. surpass the record by far!

The retro market is booming

Whether Nintendo , Sony, Atari or Sega – everything is collected. The main thing is that the video games, consoles and accessories are old and rare. Old games are already achieving top prices on Ebay and the trend continues year after year. Not only well-known consoles such as Super Nintendo or the Atari 2600 are popular collectibles. Even flopped and therefore rare devices such as Nintendo’s Virtual Boy, a failed excursion into the VR world in 1995, are on the wish lists of retro enthusiasts. The latter goes over the virtual counter at auctions for several hundred euros.

Collectors not only throw themselves on cassettes, discs and hardware, but also on the associated cardboard cases and packaging. Nintendo, for example, only started using plastic sleeves with the appearance of the Gamecube in 2001. Before that, there was cardboard packaging, which many ended up in the trash or in the corner with little care. That is exactly what makes them rare and therefore valuable. So if you still have the original cardboard packaging in good condition for a rare game, you will achieve a much higher sales price. It only becomes even more interesting if these are still originally welded and have therefore never been opened.

Also popular with fans are promotional copies, test devices for dealers, prototypes and other games and consoles that never ended up in the open sale. They are happy to generate revenues in the four or even five-digit euro range. For a long time the most valuable game in the world, Nintendo World Championship, which was given out to the winners in a competition in 1990 in a number of 26. That was worth 100,088 US dollars (around 88,800 euros) to a buyer.

TECHNOLOGY BUTTON means

“$ 660,000 for a video game is extraordinary. But the end of the story has not yet been reached. Just like comics, video games are now collectibles and also an investment. At some point, a million dollar game is sure to hit the table. Of course, the normal collector cannot get hold of these and will not find them in his attic either. Nevertheless, it should be worthwhile to find out more and to invest in video games even on a small scale.”
