As a rule, Netflix keeps a low profile when it comes to specific click figures. But now the streaming provider has announced which is the most successful series of 2020 so far.
Netflix is the undisputed leader in in-house productions in the streaming market. However, the provider rarely reveals how well or badly the self-produced series and films are received by the audience. Only for their own country can the user find out which content is currently being streamed a lot via the categories “Particularly popular” and “Top 10”. But now Netflix has surprisingly announced what the most popular series is in 2020, which is soon to end!
The most popular Netflix series of 2020 is a newcomer
2020 was a strong year for Netflix, despite or perhaps because of Corona. In addition to good user numbers, a lot of new films and series came onto the market. Shooting canceled because of the virus will probably only really make itself felt in 2021. Start dates for mega productions like the second “Witcher” season have already been postponed. In 2020, however, Netflix subscribers could look forward to major innovations such as “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”, “The Kissing Booth 2”, “Barbarians” or a new season of “The Crown” (running on Netflix from November).
Now the streaming giant has announced on its social channels which of the many new productions was actually the most successful. Somewhat surprising is the horror mystery series “Ratched”, the new series from the creators of “American Horror Story”!
Best series start of the year
Netflix got pretty specific with the numbers:
In the four weeks since the start of the series, 48 million users have seen “Ratched” or “made an appointment with sister Ratched,” as Netflix puts it with a wink.
The streaming provider announced the series in advance and pushed it through all available marketing channels. Nevertheless, it was not to be expected that this would result in such a spectator success.
That’s what the popular series is about
The Netflix original series is about the history of one of the most famous fictional characters in the horror genre: Sister Mildred Ratched from the novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. In 1947, the nurse (played by Sarah Paulson) began working in a California mental institution. There new and mostly cruel therapies are carried out on the patients. Sister Ratched is very open to these methods and develops into a cold-hearted tyrant who enjoys her power over the defenseless patients over the course of the series. Critics have already praised the series for its great ensemble and the colorful, sometimes clinical 1940s look, which stands in stark contrast to the atrocities depicted.
The material has already been worked up many times in film and theater. The best known is the film by Michael Douglas from 1975, which won an Oscar for best film. Mildred Ratched is played by Louise Fletcher, who also received an Oscar for her role.
