Is it Worth Buying the Samsung Galaxy A10 at a Discount Store?

With the Samsung Galaxy A10, Lidl will be offering a smartphone from next week, the price of which sounds temptingly low at 147.44 euros. But what performance do buyers get for the money and is it worth buying the smartphone? TECHNOLOGY BUTTON took a closer look at the Samsung Galaxy A10 in the check.

Samsung relaunched its entry-level and mid-range classes a while ago. From the Galaxy A10 to the Galaxy A90, the smartphones have been given a new name that sorts the devices according to their performance. The Galaxy A10 at the beginning of the series offers the features of an entry-level smartphone paired with a good price.

Samsung Galaxy A10 at Lidl

The Samsung Galaxy A10 has a recommended retail price of 169 euros. Many online retailers are now selling the device cheaper. With them, the smartphone is available from around 140 euros including shipping. The food discounter Lidl cannot undercut this price. Here the device costs 147.44 euros. It will be available in the retailer’s online shop from next week.

Competitor Aldi has offered the smartphone more often in the past. Here the prices were mostly around 120 euros – so much cheaper than the current offer at Lidl. In addition, buyers at Aldi also received the Aldi Talk prepaid tariff free of charge with the device. The starter package usually costs 12.99 euros.

The Samsung Galaxy A10 offers this performance

With its 6.2-inch display, the Galaxy A10 offers plenty of space for presentations. The resolution of 1,520 x 720 pixels (HD +) is a bit low for the display size. This shows the compromises that Samsung has to make in this price range. Nevertheless, the screen has a modern look. Samsung relies on an infinity display in 19: 9 format and thus manages to keep the housing compact. The screen is only interrupted by a small, teardrop-shaped notch that houses the 5-megapixel front camera with f / 2.0 aperture.

On the back there is another camera that takes pictures with up to 13 megapixels. At f / 1.9, the aperture is only slightly larger than that of the front camera. Unfortunately, it cannot keep up with the large bezels of the higher-priced models (up to f /1.3), which is why the Galaxy A10 is not that suitable for taking pictures in twilight or at night. With a price of less than 120 euros, the smartphone is also much cheaper.

Samsung uses the in-house Exynos 7884 in the Galaxy A10 together with 2 GB of RAM and at least 32 GB of expandable storage. The processor consists of a total of eight cores, which are divided into two Cortex-A73 cores with up to 1.6 GHz and six energy-saving A53 cores with up to 1.35 GHz. The Exynos 7884 is manufactured using the 14 nanometer process and is accompanied by the Mali-G71 MP2 graphics unit. The LTE module is also rather weaker with a maximum bandwidth of 150 Mbit / s in the downstream. Surfing via WLAN is only possible in the 2.4 GHz band, as the Galaxy A10 only supports WLAN b/g/n.

Not for the discerning

Overall, the chip is a solid entry-level model that copes well with regular smartphone applications. Users who often play games on their mobile phones or who like to run several applications in parallel should, however, look for a different model because the performance of the Galaxy A10 is too low.

The capacity of the battery in the Galaxy A10 is decent at 3,400 mAh. In addition, the device supports the current Bluetooth 5.0 and real dual SIM, so it offers two SIM slots independent of the microSD card. Android 9 Pie runs ex works on the Galaxy A10, but Samsung has been offering an update to Android 10 since May 2020. However, users have to do without a fingerprint sensor for unlocking. The classic methods of PIN, password and pattern or face unlocking are available as alternatives.

Alternatives to the Galaxy A10

With the Samsung Galaxy A10, buyers get a solid entry-level smartphone at a low price, which has a modern look with a large display. It impresses with highlights such as Bluetooth 5.0, real dual SIM and a solid battery. The performance is okay, but not suitable for more complex tasks. It’s also a shame that users have to do without a fingerprint sensor and WLAN ac.

In the overview of smartphones up to 100 euros, TECHNOLOGY BUTTON has listed models that have a similar price. This shows that the features of the slightly more expensive models are sometimes significantly better. Double the memory, dual cameras and a better processor are almost standard here.

The Galaxy A10 is not a bad smartphone. However, the price that Lidl calls as part of the offer is not optimal. Not only was the smartphone more than 27 euros cheaper in the past, other retailers are also currently offering it at low prices. Buying from Lidl is not really recommended.
