iPhone SE 3 – Launch Date and Features Leaked

Even in the run-up to the launch of the iPhone SE 2020, the fan base speculated whether a plus version of the inexpensive iPhone could come at a later date. This rumor now seems to be buried, however, as there are indications of a completely new iPhone SE.

It is still completely unclear what Apple will call the new iPhone SE model. At the moment it is simply going online as the iPhone SE 3. Unlike the current iPhone SE 2020, which is extremely compact at 4.7 inches, it is probably a lot larger. The leak specifies a display size of 6.06 inches for the iPhone SE 3, which, like the iPhone SE 2020, should be an LCD panel. Since the leaked data came from industry insiders, even Sharp and Japan Display Inc. (JDI) are specifically named as manufacturers for it. Accordingly, the iPhone SE 3 would be the last iPhone on which Apple still uses LCD instead of OLED.

Still Touch ID instead of Face ID

We can see from the table that the SE 3 could continue to use a Touch ID sensor instead of Face ID. This is also the case with the iPhone SE 2020, which of all current iPhones is the only one with Touch ID. The question that arises is whether Touch ID will be used in the SE 3 in the form of a round home button like in the SE 2020. After all, Apple is now using a Touch ID sensor in the new iPad Air that is integrated into the side button.

Depending on what Apple is betting on, there are two conceivable scenarios:

  1. The iPhone SE 3 will have a home button with Touch ID and its design will be similar to the iPhone SE 2020. That means: thick bezels at the top and bottom.
  2. The iPhone SE 3 will have a side button with Touch ID, which allows the display edges to shrink. Theoretically, a design as in the iPhone Xr or iPhone 11 is possible.

The first scenario is conceivable as Apple needs a way to differentiate its premium iPhones from the budget-oriented iPhone SE. However, the fact that an iPhone with a 6.06-inch screen would be decidedly too big if it had the same large display bezels as the iPhone SE 2020 speaks for scenario 2. The iPhone 8 Plus, with its 5.5-inch display and thick bezels, is too big for many hands. Even the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is also mentioned in the Twitter leak and is said to have a 6.67-inch screen, would be smaller than a 6.06-inch iPhone SE with iPhone 8 Plus bezels .

First SE with 5G and dual camera?

Ross Young suspects that the next iPhone SE could catch up and also get 5G. However, only a modem with support for frequencies below 6 gigahertz should be used (Sub6). Faster speeds are reserved for the Pro models of the iPhone.

The dual module from the iPhone 11 could be used as a camera. The main camera would therefore have pixels with a size of 1.4 micrometers. A time-of-flight camera (ToF), which is known from the iPad Pro and will also be used in the iPhone 12, will probably not exist.

Young does not expect the iPhone SE 3 to hit the market until spring 2022.

Information about the iPhone 13

In addition to the iPhone SE 3, Young’s tweet also contains a lot of information about the iPhone 13 models scheduled for 2021.

Two iPhone 13 models …

Accordingly, there could be two models of the iPhone 13, an iPhone 13 Pro and an iPhone 13 Pro Max. The iPhone 13 will come in two sizes, one with a 5.42-inch screen and the other with a 6.06-inch panel. According to the leak, both versions could get a dual camera on the back. The data sheet is even very specific. Allegedly, the iPhone 13 will take over the main camera of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which will have a sensor with 1.7 micrometer pixels. As expected, 5G will be found in both iPhone 13 versions, but only with frequencies below 6 gigahertz (Sub6).

… and two iPhone 13 Pro models

With a 6.06-inch screen, the iPhone 13 Pro could be just as big as the “normal” iPhone 13. In the iPhone 13 Pro Max, however, the screen should be even larger at 6.67-inches. According to the leak, both models have the same triple camera on the back with a main sensor with 1.9 micrometer pixels and SensorShift, as well as a time-of-flight sensor (ToF). In addition to Sub6 frequencies for 5G, the Pro models should also support millimeter wave (mmW), i.e. operate on frequencies beyond 28 GHz. mmW enables significantly faster data transmission than pure Sub6-5G.

In another tweet, Young added that he expected ProMotion displays for the Pro models. These should have variable refresh rates and reach a maximum of 120 Hertz. With 120 Hertz, the movements and animations displayed on the screen react even more fluently to user input. All iPhone 13 models should have OLED screens and continue to use Face ID.
