In order to protect minors from sexual harassment, parent company Facebook is now planning further youth protection updates for its popular Instagram network.
Less direct contact on Instagram should improve the protection of minors
In the future, Instagram would like to prevent accounts of minors from ending up in other people’s suggestions. The developers behind Instagram are also introducing a new feature that makes it impossible for adults to write to minors. With this parental control function, Instagram prevents a lot of direct messages. If an adult tries to write to a minor, contact will be blocked directly. However, this restriction is lifted when the adolescent follows the adult.
Minors or adults who indicate their age incorrectly can also bypass the mechanism. Nevertheless, the restriction should remain. However, Instagram would also like to rely on AI (artificial intelligence) in order to be able to better recognize the true age of users. It remains to be seen whether this will work out. TECHNOLOGY BUTTON sees a big problem here, because perpetrators usually act cleverly and quickly outsmart alibi measures.
New login options for minors
Parent company Facebook has also expanded the login options for users on Instagram. Minors should make a conscious decision whether to create the account as a private person or as a publicly accessible one. Both variants differ in the way they contact strangers. According to a press release from Facebook, minors who operate a public account will in future be informed of the advantages of a private account by notification.

“Caution” message in direct message
Further functions for the protection of minors are currently in the test phase. In addition to the advanced login settings and notifications, there should also be warnings in direct messages that protect the young community from conspicuous behavior by adult users. For example, a “caution” message can block communication in advance. How Instagram would like to recognize misconduct and whether it will ban the dubious sender from the network is not clear. The test phase is currently running in several countries, including the USA. Facebook hopes to roll out the feature soon.
