Fritz boxes that no longer receive updates

Mobile phones, tablets, PCs, routers or other devices – they all need regular updates to stay up to date. But after a certain time, the support from the manufacturer often ends. So also with AVM.
The Berlin manufacturer has a large number of routers in its range, some of which are a bit old. Nevertheless, many of them will still be provided with new functions even after years. At least once a year AVM publishes a new version of its Fritz! OS, the firmware for the Fritz boxes. In between there are also minor updates that are mostly tested in the Fritz! Laboratory beforehand via beta. With these updates, AVM keeps its Fritzboxes and other devices up to date – not only in terms of security and stability, but also in terms of new features.
But such updates are not endless. Because at some point AVM will also part with models that are already a few years old. Sometimes it is a bit surprising which Fritz boxes are. Well-known models have often been on the market longer than we thought they would. For this reason, the manufacturer has published a list in which it names the end of support for its Fritzbox models and its other device groups.
At the turn of the year AVM stopped the updates for two well-known Fritz boxes. Support for two WLAN repeaters also ended.

EOM and EOS – that’s behind them
In the list, AVM not only differentiates between product categories such as Fritz boxes, Fritz! Fons or adapters, but also between the terms EOM (End of Maintenance – end of updates) and EOS (End of Support – end of support). And this is what the abbreviations say:
- EOM : AVM specifies when the company will stop developing a router. There will be no more updates or patches on the date mentioned.
- EOS : This abbreviation tells owners of a Fritzbox when the support for their model ends. You will then no longer receive telephone support or help via the website.

The voluntary product guarantee, which AVM usually promises five years from the first sale of a Fritzbox, remains in effect even after the end of maintenance or end of support. If a Fritzbox breaks during this time, AVM must repair it or provide a replacement. If end customers wish to make use of the manufacturer’s guarantee, however, they need the purchase receipt or delivery receipt from their provider for the respective router.
Updates and support for these AVM devices will end soon
In the overview, AVM not only lists devices whose support and update end was a while ago, but also models that will be affected in the near future. As mentioned, the manufacturer differentiates between the product categories. If the end of support for a model has been announced or is imminent, interested parties should consider whether it is still worth buying the corresponding device. In most cases, AVM has replaced it with a successor that not only offers the manufacturer support for a longer period of time, but also often comes with more up-to-date equipment.
Fritz boxes
- Fritzbox 6590 Cable – EOM: December 31, 2020 / EOS: June 30, 2021
The Fritzbox 6590 Cable is a very relevant box in the cable sector and has long been considered a flagship. It was presented in June 2015. In the meantime, however, it has been replaced by the Fritzbox 6591 Cable. The cable router no longer receives updates, but support until the end of June 2021.
- Fritzbox 7580 – EOM: January 02, 2021 / EOS: November 30, 2022
Introduced in spring 2016, the Fritzbox 7580 went on sale in September of the same year. It offers many of the functions of the Fritzbox 7590 , which was introduced later , but is more slimmed down. For example, the Fritzbox 7580 does not support VDSL supervectoring and only has IP telephone connections, but not connections for analog landline and ISDN. For this reason, the Fritzbox 7590 quickly moved into focus and made the 7580 controversial. With the start of the new year, AVM will end the updates for the device. The manufacturer continues to provide support.
- Fritz! Repeater 310 – EOM: February 01, 2020 / EOS: December 30, 2021
The AVM Repeater 310 has been available for a long time. It was presented in autumn 2012 and has since been replaced by technically better models. The device no longer receives updates, but AVM continues to provide support in the event of problems.

- Fritz! Repeater 450E – EOM: February 01, 2020 / EOS: December 30, 2020
The Fritz! Repeater 450E has also been around for a few years. Introduced in 2014, its support expired at the end of 2020. No wonder, given the lack of support for the 5 GHz band, it almost seems like a relic from the old days.
- Fritz! Repeater 1160 – EOM: June 30, 2020 / EOS: December 31, 2020
In November 2015, AVM launched its Fritz! Repeater 1160 on the market. After about five years, its support finally expired at the end of 2020. Although there are now repeaters that can achieve faster transmission rates, the 1160 doesn’t have to hide in spite of its age. Using dual-band WiFi, it achieves theoretical speeds of up to 866 Mbit / s in the 5 GHz band and up to 300 Mbit / s in the 2.4 GHz band.
Alternatives from other manufacturers
AVM often offers alternatives for outdated Fritz boxes and adapters. The company is particularly popular with users because of its variety of devices and the easy-to-organize router interface. But there are also other manufacturers of routers and home network devices that are definitely worth a look and offer some worthwhile alternatives to the Fritzboxes.
Manufacturers such as Netgear, Asus, Cisco but also TP-Link are among the most prominent names in this area. Asus excels with special gaming routers, for example, while Cisco is strong in the business segment. Like Asus, Netgear has some of the fastest routers on offer and TP-Link scores with the variety of antennas and thus a high range.
