Correct surround sound is actually only possible with the appropriate system. However, thanks to technical tricks, Apple’s AirPods Pro and AirPods Max can produce a very similar sound. TECHNOLOGY BUTTON shows how to activate the cinema sound.
Apple‘s AirPods Pro and AirPods Max have a special function called 3D audio (“Spatial Audio”). The headphones work together with the phone to create a three-dimensional sound field. Noises in films that support 3D audio then seem to come from the right direction.
Voices sound from where they are in relation to the user’s head. To do this, the iPhone or iPad and the Airpods use their position sensors to locate the device and head in relation to one another.

Enable 3D audio for AirPods in settings
The setting for this can be found in the Bluetooth menu of the iOS device. Here the “i” symbol is tapped next to the paired Airpods Pro or Max. 3D audio can be activated in the following menu. Conveniently, there is also a taste of how 3D audio sounds compared to the usual stereo sound.
If you want to see whether the current film on the iOS device supports 3D audio, open the control center and long tap on the volume control. 3D audio can be controlled in the following menu. It is shown whether the function is available.
3D audio currently only works with the Airpods Pro and Max and all iPhones from the iPhone 7. The iPad must be an iPad Pro, iPad Air from the 3rd generation or an iPad from the 6th generation. The iPad mini is supported from the 5th generation. iOS version 14 or newer must be installed.
