Easily find out the owner of an unknown cell phone number

Are you annoyed by unknown cell phone numbers on your smartphone? TECHNOLOGY BUTTON shows which tricks can be used to easily find out the name of the caller.

Another unknown caller on your smartphone? That can be quite annoying: Is it maybe a friend with a new number – or is it just the annoying hotline employee of the mobile phone provider who wants to advertise a new contract? Even worse: Perhaps a stalker, the tax office or a club acquaintance who has already been repressed will ring. Don’t worry: it is possible to find out the identity of the caller from the mobile phone number.

Phonebook with reverse search

A good first port of call is the reverse search for the telephone book in the online telephone book: Here you can simply enter the number and the owner of the corresponding telephone connection is displayed – at least if he / she agreed to an entry beforehand. The application is intuitive and the database is quite comprehensive – at least.

Messenger WhatsApp can also help to assign an unknown cell phone number: Simply save the unknown number in the phone book of your smartphone. If the caller has an account with WhatsApp , you will automatically find them under “Contacts”. A profile picture or the status can perhaps provide information about the identity.

Call mailbox

If this is still unsuccessful, a call to the mailbox may help clarify – the caller may have set up an individual announcement for his smartphone mailbox. There is a way to call voicemail directly without it ringing first. You can see which provider the caller is with from the area codes, which are distributed as follows:

Telecom:

01511
01512
01514
01515
01516
01517
0160
0170
0171
0175

Vodafone:

01520
01522
01523
01525
0162
0172
0173
0174

O2 (and E-Plus):

01590
0176
0179
01570
01573
01575
01577
01578
0163
0177
0178

If a call comes in with the number 01520-1234567, you know that he is a Vodafone customer. If you want to call the mailbox, turn off the number 50 makes a call the following number: 01520- 50 -1234567. So if, for example, the cell phone number you want to check belongs to Vodafone according to the area code, but now uses a telecommunications contract with the same number, the call is automatically forwarded to the mailbox.

Note: Caution is advised if none of the common numbers were used for the call. Unless you have dear relatives or friends overseas – which would explain a foreign number and make it easier to identify – you should be careful that it might not be a payment trap.

Use google search

Of course, you can also simply enter the number on Google for testing purposes – but you should keep a few things in mind. Make sure you enter the number in quotation marks (“”) so that Google only searches for this specific sequence of numbers. Perhaps you will find such a company to which you can assign the number. On sites like “ Tellows ” you can also enter the number and see whether other users have already complained about spam or rip-offs and tell who is behind the number. Then you at least know that you can save yourself the call back.

Be careful with CallerID sites like “Opencnam”

Another point of contact are CallerID sites such as Opencnam : If you enter a telephone number here, the site will in the best case actually spit out a name for it. TECHNOLOGY BUTTON has tested it in the past with several numbers – and was surprised: Although there was not a result for every number, with some it actually worked, both first and last name were correct. Kind of creepy – but also useful.

However, the whole thing should be treated with caution! Portals like t3n or bento report cases in which the site even spit out people’s nicknames and place of residence. This is due to the fact that the operator of the site uses the data from telephone providers.

If you still have no clarity and feel harassed by the caller – TECHNOLOGY BUTTON gives tips in the following article on how you can easily block annoyances .
