Do not Scare! WhatsApp will be able to call you soon

Lately there have been several reports of hijacked WhatsApp accounts. The messenger has reacted and is planning a new security function, the so-called “Flash Calls”. TECHNOLOGY BUTTON reveals what’s behind it.

If you want to create a new account on WhatsApp or move your existing smartphone to a new one, you have to verify your mobile phone number. To do this, the messenger sends an automatically generated 6-digit code to the user. But it is precisely this code that fraudsters often try to take over the WhatsApp account . WhatsApp would like to contact its users via Flash Call so that this is no longer so easy in the future.

This is how the WhatsApp Flash Call works

According to “ WABetaInfo“To verify the stored cell phone number. So far, WhatsApp has sent the said code via SMS, which users then had to enter manually in a window. However, there is a risk that the code will be tapped and that strangers can take over the account. The flash call excludes this possibility. WhatsApp calls the user’s mobile phone number registered in Messenger, records the last phone number called in the call log and uses this to verify the account. WhatsApp then ends the flash call, which only lasts a few seconds.

There is no conversation between the user and WhatsApp. Also, users do not have to enter a code manually, as WhatsApp has carried out the verification automatically in the background.

Since the last phone number called always changes, there is no way to trick the method, according to WABetaInfo. However, users have to share their call log with the messenger and allow phone calls so that WhatsApp can make flash calls at all. The messenger emphasizes that the calls made can only be viewed for one-time verification and not for any other purpose. Since the option is not mandatory, everyone can also decide for themselves whether they want to verify their WhatsApp account via Flash Call or traditionally via SMS code.

Flash Call is currently only planned for Android

Incidentally, according to WABetaInfo, the function will not be available for iPhone users. An introduction is initially only planned for Android. The flash call method is still under development, so it is not yet known when WhatsApp will introduce it.
