Did you know why many cameras can only film for 30 minutes?

It goes without saying that cameras can now also record videos. But the recording often stops after a few minutes, at the latest after half an hour. What shoud that?

Hardly any camera records videos for more than half an hour at a time. The recording is over after 29 minutes and 59 seconds at the latest. The reason for this is as curious as it is simple. The legal situation and the pricing of cameras are responsible, reports Stiftung Warentest.

The time limit for cameras is artificial

Cameras that can film for more than half an hour would be legally classified as video recording devices and would be charged a customs fee upon import. Because this would make the devices more expensive, the manufacturers simply artificially limited the recording time.

However, there are cameras here and there that are not subject to this restriction. No video time limit has been set in the device software (firmware) for these models. So if you value absolute video freedom, you have to research carefully before buying so that you can find such a model.

As examples of cameras without a video time limit, the experts name the weatherproof Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5M system camera (around 1650 euros) or the premium compact camera Sony ZV-1 (around 800 euros).
