With the Zenfone 8, the iPhone SE faces competition in the market for compact flagship smartphones. The Zenfone 8 Flip is bigger and comes with a folding camera again.
The Zenfone 8 is a compact flagship smartphone
The new top model Zenfone 8 from Asus is comparatively small with a screen size of 5.9 inches and a weight of 169 grams. This time, the Taiwanese focus on ease of use with one hand. The hardware is largely the same as in other current top models from the competition. The starting price is 669 euros.
Asus has installed the Snapdragon 888 5G as the main chip. It allows the simultaneous operation of two SIM cards. The memory sizes are 128 and 256 gigabytes (GB) and up to 16 GB of RAM. The 5.0 inch AMOLED display (1080 to 2400 pixels) can regulate the refresh rate between 60, 90 and 120 Hertz as required. Its 4000 mAh battery capacity will keep the Zenfone 8 in operation for a good two days. There is no wireless charging, but fast charging with 30 watts.

Contrary to the trend towards more and more cameras, Asus relies on the essentials with the Zenfone 8, namely on “only” two cameras: a main camera with 64 megax pixels (MP) and an ultra-wide-angle camera with 12 MP and optical stabilization. Both were developed with Sony.
Android 11 is installed ex works as the operating system. A number of practical things can be set using Asus’ own launcher. For example, double user accounts for popular messengers, gesture control or a game mode. Asus promises “at least two” major system updates.

The Zenfone Flip is also getting an update. As usual, version 8 has a rotating main camera that can also be used as a selfie camera via an electric motor. In addition to the 64 MP main camera and the 12 MP wide-angle camera, there is also a telephoto camera with 8 MP and triple optical magnification. As in the predecessor, the cameras are not optically stabilized.
The rotating camera allows motorized panoramic shots and unusual angles. With the model, Asus also wants to appeal to vloggers who want to take pictures of themselves without sacrificing quality. So that the flip camera lasts for a long time, it retracts automatically in the event of a fall or impact. The supplied case has a latch that locks the camera in place.
Inside the Zenfone 8 Flip is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 5G. There is also 256 GB of memory and 8 GB of RAM. With a screen size of 6.67 inches (1080 to 2400 pixels) and a weight of 230 grams, it is significantly more massive than the smaller Zenfone 8. Here, too, there is no wireless charging option for the 5000 mAh battery. The price is 799 euros.
