The shift from linear TV usage to flexible streaming offers is unstoppable. In this breath, the ARD restructured the in-house media library and expanded the streaming offer. In the future, there will no longer be a single ARD app, but a more extensive media library that also offers content from related broadcasters.
The public service programs remain financed by license fees. Nevertheless, they are in competition with private providers such as Netflix and Co. The predominantly younger audience is making less and less use of the linear TV offer – flexible streaming is far more popular. ARD, ZDF and others therefore also offer apps.

ARD app is thrown out of the app store
In the future, there should no longer be an ARD app in the well-known app stores. Instead, the ARD media library app is available for download. There is also cross-channel content from the ARD universe. These include phoenix, One, tagesschau24, ARD-alpha, funk and all regional third-party programs.

Navigation and search should be improved
With the discontinuation of the ARD app, there have been some changes. Users can look forward to a bundled media library, which, according to ARD, is also more user-friendly. These include new features, such as carefully maintained overview pages, which bring viewers to their desired destination faster thanks to a tidy look. Due to the expansion of the range of related stations, there is now much more material, but it can also be played back faster thanks to the intuitive navigation of the app.
“The bundling of our video offers in the ARD media library is consistent with the focus on our strong digital brands: media library, audio library, Tagesschau, Sportschau and KiKA. The simpler and more intuitive the user experience for our users, the better! ”Says Benjamin Fischer, Head of ARD Online.
Also new: the Tatort Premium area. There, viewers will find current episodes, classics and additional material, such as exclusive background information on filming and interviews with the actors.
In addition, viewers have been able to use the ARD and ZDF media libraries across users since March last year. This means that one and the same login works on both portals.
