All Marvel series at Disney + at a glance

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a guarantee for box office hits in recent years. Disney is planning some Marvel series for the next few years exclusively for its streaming service Disney +.

The series “WandaVision” heralded a new phase in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – MCU for short – in January 2021: Phase 4. Disney + is taking a bold step with the squeaky, sitcom-like Marvel series. On the one hand, the narrative is shifting away from the cinema blockbuster to the series format. On the other hand, many new barrels are opened thematically, because “WandaVision” is by far not the only series from the MCU that will start in the very near and somewhat distant future with the streaming provider. Disney + is planning an impressive 13 more Marvel series. Some of them have already been completed. TECHNOLOGY BUTTON introduces you to these 13 series and other projects from the universe that will be shown on Disney +.

The MCU of the past few years

Briefly to explain: Phase 1 includes the films about the core Avengers, so when everything was a little more contemplative. The alien invasions were smaller, the multiverse still unmentioned, the power of the Infinity Stones for those who don’t know the comics, just a hunch. These include:

  • Iron man (2008)
  • The Incredible Hulk (2008)
  • Iron Man 2 (2010)
  • Thor (2011)
  • Captain America – The First Avenger (2011)
  • Marvel’s The Avengers (2012)

Phase 2 introduces new superheroes like Ant-Man, Wanda Maximoff, Vision, and the Guardians of the Galaxy. There are also various sequels about the familiar faces.

  • Iron Man 3 (2013)
  • Thor 2: The Dark Kingdom (2013)
  • Captain America 2: The Return of the First Avenger (2014)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
  • Marvel’s The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron
  • Ant-Man (2015)

In phase 3 things were particularly high in the end. A crash in their own ranks split the Avengers, Doctor Strange brought up alternative realities and time travel and everything boiled down to a showdown with the main villain Thanos.

  • The First Avenger: Civil War (2016)
  • Doctor Strange (2016)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
  • Thor 3: Decision Day (2017)
  • Black Panther (2018)
  • The Avengers 3: Infinity War (2018)
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
  • Captain Marvel (2019)
  • Avengers 4: Endgame (2019)

After that there was of course “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), which can also be counted in phase 4 or is a big swan song in phase 3. And this is exactly where the Marvel series planned by Disney + start.

Marvel series at Disney + 2021

After the Avengers’ losses in the past two films (hopefully this isn’t a spoiler for everyone who shouldn’t have seen the film for whatever reason), the remaining team members have to deal with the situation first. The theme runs through “WandaVision” and will also play a role in several other Marvel series on Disney +. In phase 4, many heroes get a series that was previously a bit in the shadow of the great Avengers around Iron Man. Apart from “WandaVision” of course, five more series are planned for 2021.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

When: March 19, 2021

Length: six episodes of 40–50 minutes each in one season

As the title and trailer reveal, it’s about “The Falcon” Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and the “Winter Soldier” Bucky Barns (Sebastian Stan). Both characters are best known from the Captain America films. The focus is on the legacy of “Cap”, who (spoilers) has decided to stay with his great love Peggy in the past and therefore handed over his shield to Sam. He and Bucky were close to the captain, but they don’t really like each other. The trailer promises a lot of action and a mood that is almost reminiscent of a “buddy movie”. Daniel Brühl as the villain, known from “Civil War”, also seems to reappear. A proud budget of 150 million US dollars was available for the six episodes, which promises a blockbuster feeling.

Loki

When: May 2021

Length: six episodes of 40–50 minutes each in one season, second season announced

The god of lies and jokes is back. As one of the MCU’s most popular characters, it was clear early on that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) would get his own Marvel series at Disney +. This was actually already announced for 2020, but production then had to be interrupted due to the corona pandemic. In May, the time has come and thanks to the Infinity Stone and the resulting alternative reality, Loki can do his mischief again. Exciting: This of course means that Loki’s entire development in previous films is also omitted. We are dealing with an earlier version of himself. That promises a lot of humor and a good playground for actor Tom Hiddleston.

What If …?

When: summer 2021

Length: 23 episodes in two seasons

Another MCU animation series is coming this year with “What If …?”. The title says it all: What if? What if the famous heroes had acted differently or completely different people had taken their places? This Marvel series wants to give space primarily to the minor characters who have played a very minor role so far. Lots of characters and especially their voices are returning.

Miss Marvel

When: End of 2021

Length: not known

With “Miss Marvel” it is clearly in the direction of the teen series, completely new tones in the MCU. Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) is a teenager and the daughter of Muslim parents. In the comics she is a so-called inhuman who already played a role in the Disney + Marvel series “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD”. Her new creative powers enable Kamala to face current problems such as bullying in her environment. She is always based on her great role model, Captain Marvel. The character also has appearances in the still planned films.

Hawk Eye

When: End of 2021

Length: six episodes in one season

With Hawkeye, an Avengers veteran gets his own series, namely archer Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner). The veteran is looking for a successor to his bow and finds her in Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). So far, promising set images have primarily emerged.

Helstrom

When: February 23, 2021

Length: ten episodes in one season

The “Helstrom” series will be coming to Disney + via the new Star area at the end of February. This is not an in-house production, but a Hulu series that was intended as part of a “dark MCU”. After the takeover of Marvel Television the whole project was crushed, only “Helstrom” was as good as shot and was therefore still finished. The focus is on the two siblings Daimon and Ana Helstrom (Tom Austen and Sidney Lemmon) who hunt demons together. Her dark family history catches up with her again and again. It’s already been confirmed that there won’t be a second season.

Marvel series at Disney 2022

Disney + already has quite specific plans for the MCU for the coming year 2022. At least three series (and a Christmas special) are in the works.

Moon Knight

When: 2022

Length: six episodes of 40–50 minutes each in one season

The protagonist of this Marvel series has not yet been seen in the films: Marc Spector aka Moon Knight (Oscar Isaac). Ethan Hawk has already been confirmed in the role of the villain. Moon Knight is actually a mercenary who is injured during an expedition in Sudan and betrayed and left behind by his crew. Unexpectedly, Spector is joined by the moon god Khonshu, who gives him special powers. For this he will use Spector as a personal spirit of revenge in the future. This has psychological consequences: the hero against his will develops multiple personalities. Both the plot and the showrunner Jeremy Slater, known for “Umbrella Academy”, promise a lot of action, but also funny moments.

She-hulk

When: 2022

Length: ten episodes of 20-30 minutes each in one season

One of the greatest Marvel heroines in the comics is now getting her own series at Disney +. We’re talking about Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk. Bruce Banner’s cousin is actually a dedicated lawyer. To save her life after an assassination attempt, she is injected with the blood of Bruce the Hulk. From now on she fights crime as a female Hulk in two ways. Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) probably plays the title heroine, and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner should also play a role.

Secret invasion

When: 2022

Length: not known

SH.IELD boss Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) also gets his own Marvel series at Disney +. He probably has the Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelson) at his side, who with his ability to change shape already slipped into his shape in (spoiler) “Spider-Man: Far from Home”. You get to do with a criminal Skrull splinter group that wants to infiltrate humanity.

Armor Wars

When: 2022

Length: not known

What if Tony Stark’s Iron Man Technique fell into the wrong hands? That has always been one of Tony’s nightmares and has already happened in the movie “Iron Man 2”. In the planned Marvel series “Armor Wars” at Disney +, things are going to be a bit bigger. It’s good that Tony doesn’t have to deal with it himself anymore, instead it hits his friend James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), the “War Machine”.

Ironheart

When: 2022

Length: not known

Iron Man also needs someone to take on his oversized legacy. At first glance, the young Riri Williams is actually his exact opposite pole: young (not that Tony Stark would be that old at the end of the films, but she is much younger at 15), female, a person of color and anything but one wealthy corporate heiress. What they have in common is their inventive genius. She develops her own combat suit and tries to follow in Tony’s footsteps.

I am Groot

When: 2022

Length: unknown

Groot, the legendary talking tree creature of the Guardians, who sacrificed himself for his friends and was later nursed back as Baby Groot. As a teen groot, he regularly drove his partner Rocket to despair. For fans, he’s one of the best sidekicks of all time. The baby version is now getting its own small series on Disney +, which is more likely to be in the direction of several small animated short films. By the way, there will also be a special Christmas episode about the Guardians in 2022 entitled “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” with a length of around 50 minutes.

Marvel series at Disney + without a date

With the series productions mentioned so far, Disney + is apparently far from finished with the MCU. At least one project is still waiting in the pipeline with no date, but what a project. “Wakanda” brings viewers into the cosmos of the superhero “Black Panther”. Since actor Chadwick Boseman died of colon cancer in 2020 and Disney has already made it clear that he should not be replaced, his role as King T’Challa will probably not appear on the series. The focus is on the metropolis of Wakanda itself.

In addition, there are four animation series for Disney +, which were also created in the course of the takeover of Marvel Television or were almost finished. “Modok”, “Hit Monkey”, “Spidey and his amazing friends” and “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur”.

Assessment of the Disney + Marvel series

Disney + has already shown with “WandaVision” that the MCU’s potential is far from being exhausted. If you look at the flood of new Marvel series that the streaming provider is still planning, the following is noticeable: From teen comedy to buddy movie to lawyer series, everything seems to be there. On the one hand, this promises great variety and, on the other hand, it shows that Disney + is also experimenting a bit. New approaches such as in Taika Waititis “Thor 3” have already been very successful in the past.

The expansion of the MCU, especially towards the multiverse, is exciting. Many heroes of the MCU known from the comics are also introduced through the series, and there are signs of a changing of the guard in the direction of the films. It is also already known that a merger with the X-Men and the Fantastic Four is planned in the coming phase. That could mean a lot of series material for the next decades at Disney +! For the time being, “Loki”, “Hawkeye” and “Moon Knight” in particular are expected with great excitement. But the other projects also promise the best Marvel entertainment.
