Agree to new WhatsApp terms or delete the app

Operator Facebook will change WhatsApp’s terms of use on February 8, 2021. If you want to continue using the messenger, you have to actively consent by then at the latest. TECHNOLOGY BUTTON reveals how this works and what changes.

Notifications in WhatsApp

When the new WhatsApp Terms of Use come into force on February 8, 2021, a new communication concept will be launched, according to the well-informed WABetainfo website.

According to this, WhatsApp should be able to send notifications to its users in the app in the future. The service wants to inform about updates or innovations and changes. However, WABetainfo makes it clear that they do not relate to advertising.

Active consent required

Basically, with every app you have to accept the terms of use in order to use them. Usually you do this automatically when you open the app. Often there is also a one-off question when starting up for the first time. All further updates are then installed without further consent. This is because the terms of use never actually change with updates. The ability to send in-app messages seems to require this.

WhatsApp users must therefore actively consent when asked. A corresponding message should pop up promptly in the app and must then be accepted.

What if i don’t agree?

If you refuse to agree, you will no longer be able to use the app in the future. Incidentally, this applies to all apps and services and is not a chicane from WhatsApp.

TECHNOLOGY BUTTON means

Users cannot avoid consent. In principle, this is not a bad thing and you should consent. As for the feature, I’m excited to see how WhatsApp uses it. It should be a great thing for news and updates. Hopefully it is not the gateway to plenty of advertising in Messenger.
