Activate emergency mode on the iPhone

With just one key combination you start the emergency mode on the iPhone. This means that not only the emergency call can be reached quickly, but also important emergency contacts. TECHNOLOGY BUTTON shows you how to set up the mode.

Emergency mode is a handy iPhone feature that automatically calls the emergency number when you activate it. In addition, you can define your own emergency contacts, which are then also called. So that first aiders also have an overview of any previous illnesses, blood group or allergies, an emergency pass can also be set up.

Set up emergency mode on the iPhone

Go for the iPhone settings to point emergency SOS . There a short animation shows how you can start the emergency mode.

Emergency mode on iPhone 8 and newer

With the iPhone 8 or newer, the emergency mode opens by default after holding down the power button on one of the volume buttons for a long time. Alternatively, you can specify that the mode can also be accessed by pressing the power button five times. To do this, you have to activate the option “Call with side key”. To start the function, all you have to do is pull the SOS slider to the right

If you keep the side button pressed after the emergency mode has started, a countdown begins. If you keep the button pressed until the countdown ends, you will call the emergency number directly.

Emergency mode on iPhone 7 and older

With the iPhone 7 and older iPhones, the default setting is that emergency mode can be reached by pressing the power button five times.

Automatic dialing of the emergency number

You can also decide whether the emergency number should be dialed automatically. Normally, the emergency mode dials the correct number by itself. However, in some countries you may need to enter the correct emergency number beforehand.

Set up an emergency pass in Apple Health

The emergency pass is important for setting up the emergency mode. This contains important information such as previous illnesses, allergies, medical findings and medication taken, as well as blood group, weight and height. These are things that can be crucial in an emergency.

You can create the emergency pass either directly via the SOS settings or via Apple Health. Go to Health in Settings and select the Emergency Pass option . Then click on Create Emergency Pass .

Establish emergency contacts

In the emergency pass, you can also specify contacts who will be contacted automatically by SMS in an emergency. The contacts receive a message that you have dialed the emergency call. Your current location is also stored in the message. Even if you have deactivated the location services, the location query is temporarily activated automatically in this case. The emergency contacts then receive continuous updates about their current location. A reminder appears every four hours asking if you want to stop sharing the location.

Show emergency pass when the iPhone is locked

In the emergency pass, you can also set whether the information can also be accessed when the iPhone is locked. To do this, make sure that the slider for Show in locked state is turned over. This means that the emergency pass can also be reached by holding down the side button and volume button or pressing the side button five times. This is important, for example, if you are not able to start the emergency mode yourself.
