Among the 25 candidates that are already on view on streaming providers are some real top-class players. “Mank”, “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, for example, have been nominated in the important Best Film category. We present the highlights to you.
Mank (Netflix)
With no less than 10 nominations, the most promising film at the Oscars 2021 is “Mank”. Among other things, the biographical comedy has been nominated in the major categories of Best Film, Best Director, Best Lead Actor and Best Supporting Actress. The film is based on true stories from the life of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman). He lives in seclusion on a ranch in Texas, is an alcoholic and is currently only able to walk with crutches due to an accident. When Orson Welles asked him to write the script for his film “Citizen Kane”, Mankiewicz sensed his chance.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Netflix)
Viola Davis plays in this film Gertrude “Ma” Rainey “, who was also known as the” Queen of the Blues “. In Chicago in 1927 there was a dispute between the diva and her band (including Chadwick Boseman as trumpeter Levee Green), and things didn’t go well with manager Irvin either. The music film by George C. Wolfe is nominated at the Oscars 2021 for the best costume design, among other things. Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman are also eligible for the coveted award in the categories of best leading actress and leading actor, respectively.
Sound of Metal (Amazon Prime Video)
Ruben Stone (Riz Ahmed) is a passionate drummer. When the ex-heroin junkie loses most of his hearing one day and is supposed to avoid loud noises from now on, a world collapses for him. To protect him, his partner Lou (Olivia Cooke) even breaks off the tour together. Ruben is given a place in a deaf shared apartment where he initially feels excluded. Although he is increasingly fitting into the community, he cannot give up his dream of metal music.
Soul (Disney +)
Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) is a passionate jazz musician, but so far quite unsuccessful. When one day he gets the opportunity to perform alongside a jazz icon, he falls into a sewer on the way, and his soul ends up in another dimension. From then on he is desperately looking for a way back from there to make his dream come true. The disgruntled soul 22 (Tina Fey) clings to his heels. The animated film by Pixar has been nominated at the Oscars 2021 for Best Animated Film, but also for Best Sound and Best Film Music.
News from the world (Netflix)
In 1870, former Captain Jefferson (Tom Hanks) moved to the area as a news reader. Inadvertently he gets the assignment to bring the young Johanna (Helena Zengel) back to relatives. The girl had lived with the indigenous population for a few years after her family was murdered. Together they embark on an adventurous journey across Texas. And despite the language barrier, there is a special connection between the somewhat grumpy Jefferson and the silent Johanna.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Netflix)
The thriller, which was also nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars 2021, tells about the Chicago Seven. These were political activists on trial in 1969 for conspiracy and incitement. After an actually peaceful demonstration against the Vietnam War got out of hand due to police failure, an example should be made of the seven men. Sascha Baron Cohen and Eddie Redmayne, among others, convince in the leading roles.
One Night in Miami (Amazon Prime Video)
Oscar winner Regina King makes her directorial debut with “One Night in Miami”. The eponymous night relates to February 25, 1964, when the 22-year-old boxer Cassius Clay (Eli Goore) becomes world heavyweight champion. It’s about a spectacular fight, but also about how four boxers pave the way for the black power movement.
